The Isle of Slingers

Portland is very much an Island with its own customs.  People new to the Island are known as Kimberlins and it can take generations to be considered to be a Portland family.

One of the stranger customs, but very effective, dealt with the issue of pregnancy before marriage.  The Islanders had a simple solution, if you did not marry your girlfriend then you were banished from the Island.

Portlanders have a reputation for throwing stones to keep strangers away.  Even Thomas Hardy described Portland as “The Isle of Slingers”.

Thomas Hardy based his novel “The Well-Beloved” on Church Ope Cove and Pennsylvania Castle. The descriptions still ring true today and the home of the principle characters were the Museum and Castle.
